CT Spring In-water Boat Show to benefit Sails Up 4 Cancer Announces 2019 Show Dates

Essex, CT (January 24, 2019) The Connecticut Spring Boat Show will be held Friday, May 3 – Sunday, May 5 at Essex Island Marina, a Safe Harbor Marina, 11 Ferry Street, Essex, CT. The show is a production of WindCheck Magazine and is sponsored by Essex Island Marina, Yacht Brokers Association of America, Essex Boat Works, Essex Steam Train and Riverboat and YachtWorld. 100% of attendee gate proceeds will go to Sails Up 4 Cancer, last year over $10,000 was raised for the organization.

Over thirty land based nautical exhibitors are expected to grace the dockside lawns on the Island along with the seventy plus expected in water boats.

Over 2500 visitors are anticipated with a suggested donation of $5 per person to benefit Sails Up 4 Cancer, a non-profit organization and local charity who distributes funds raised to families impacted by cancer. Attendees will see a wide range of new and brokerage, power and sail models with sea trials available. Boating gear, accessories, waterfront real estate and “water lifestyle” service companies will also be on site.

Holmgren Subaru chooses Sails Up 4 Cancer for Share the Love Partner

Sails Up 4 Cancer is proud to announce that it has been selected by Subaru America as part of this years Share the Love campaign in conjunction with Holmgren Subaru in Franklin, CT. Subaru has donated over $50 million towards a variety of charities across the country.

From November 15, 2018 until Jan 2, 2019 Subaru will donate $250 to Sails Up 4 Cancer for each car sold. Sails Up 4 Cancer, founded in 2011 is a 501(c)3 non profit corporation based in Mystic. Over the past four years Sails Up has donated over $150,000 to a variety of research centers, hospitals, hospice care, and individuals dealing with all types of cancer.

Subaru of America, Inc. donated $10 million to charitable partners during its seventh annual “Share the Love” event. Since the inception of the program, Subaru has donated over $50 million. Sails Up 4 Cancer (SU4C) is incredibly proud to have been chosen as one of this year’s charities for their campaign. Thanks to Holmgren Subaru, in Franklin , CT, Subaru was able to donate $250 for every new vehicle sold earlier this year; resulting in an incredibly generous gift to SU4C.

SU4C is a non profit organization dedicated to funding research in the education, prevention and cure for all types of cancer through the art and enjoyment of sailing. Holmgren Subaru Donates $30k to Sails Up 4 Cancer

Holmgren Subaru is proud to donate over $30,000 to SailsUp 4 Cancer through the Share The Love Campaign.
The money, raised by Holmgren, will go toward funding education, prevention, care and cure for all types of cancer. For nine years, Subaru and its retailers have partnered with more than 660 non-profits to show the company’s commitment to helping local communities. By the end 2017, Subaru hopes to exceed a grand total of $90 million donated since the creation of Share the Love.

Eric Holmgren is an avid sailor and dear friend to Bob Davis, President and founder of SU4C. Davis is a two-time cancer survivor and has an intimate relationship with cancer and cancer patients. Eric, and his wife Dawn, along with the Holmgren Family and the staff at Holmgren Subaru, believes that because of Davis’ experience with two cancers and his personal empathy with the agony that patients endure, he is the perfect person to address their needs. CT Spring Boat Show Raises Over $10k for Sails Up 4 Cancer

The Connecticut Spring Boat Show welcomed over 60 boats, varying in size from 10-55 feet, to the third annual show.The show was a production of Windcheck Magazine and was sponsored by Brewer Essex Island Marina / Safe Harbor, Essex Boat Works, and the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA).
Sails Up 4 Cancer, a Connecticut-based non-profit organization, was this year’s beneficiary. Working with the producers of the show, a $5 suggested donation was collected at the entrance of this year’s show. CT Spring Boat Show is in full support of SU4C, who are dedicated to supporting cancer care, education, prevention and research.
“We were honored to be chosen as the shows’ charity; we enjoy working with Anne Hannan and Ben Cesare, of Windcheck and are overwhelmed by the generosity of the 2018 show attendees,” said Bob Davis, two-time cancer survivor and president of SU4C. “We are just blown away by the palpable good will of the people coming to enjoy the show; not to mention the vendors and brokers who make this show a tremendous success.”
New this year was the addition of a special cocktail cruise aboard the Becky Thatcher, from Essex Steam Train and River Boat. Visitors could set sail on Friday evening for a beautiful CT River cruise with proceeds also going to SU4C.
“It was terrific to have Becky Thatcher at the show;” said Ben Cesare, publisher of Windcheck Magazine. “She added to the family-fun of the entire event.”
With the suggested $5.00 donation, Sails Up 4 Cancer will continue their mission of supporting cancer care, education, prevention and research along the Shoreline and Southeastern regions of Connecticut.

With the creation of the financial, family-assistance program, the Spinnaker Fund, SU4C has been able to alleviate financial stress and give much-needed financial relief to many families. Sails Up 4 Cancer awards $13,000 to L+M Hospital

Sails Up 4 Cancer was proud to be an honored guest at the L + M Gala on Saturday, May 12. Bob Davis, CEO and President of Sails Up 4 Cancer presented a $13,000 check to Bill Stanley during the event.

“The money will go toward the L+M Cancer Center in Waterford, CT. The donated funds will be used for their Transportation Fund and Patients Assistance Fund. As a sub-part of the Patients Assistance Fund, L+M has established the Single Women/ Head of Household Fund., said Davis. “Sails Up 4 Cancer is extremely proud to be one of the first to acknowledge and contribute to this often neglected need.”

Sails Up 4 Cancer is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to funding research, education, care and prevention for all types of cancer.

“As they always do, Sails Up 4 Cancer has recognized an important cancer-related need in our community and stepped up to fulfill it. Essex Steam Train & Riverboat teams up with Connecticut Spring Boat Show to help raise funds for SU4C!

As the Founder and CEO of Sails Up 4 Cancer, Bob Davis is a two-time cancer survivor who’s using the sport he loves to help countless people in southeastern Connecticut.

“Compared to the guys I sail with I got started pretty late, sailing an old Sunfish around Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey,” says Bob, a longtime resident of Niantic.  “It was really cool to be out there sailing alone, especially at dusk. If I had to pick a sailing mentor, it would have to be Jeffery Lutz from Point Pleasant, NJ. I always admired his skills and the fun he had…not taking himself too seriously. Much later, I had the good fortune to race a Colgate 26 with Gary Jobson at the helm. I was starstruck! Gary was incredibly calm and focused, and it was a tremendous experience.”

Bob is an enthusiastic member of the Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association. “The Mudheads is a fantastic organization with great sailors, and it’s a real honor to sail with and learn from some of the most talented sailors in our area,” he says. “I volunteer for a variety of events and committees, and I’m ecstatic that they perform Race Committee duties for the Sails Up 4 Cancer Regatta. They’re the best – no one comes close. The entire membership is such an integral part of our community in so many ways.”

“When I was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2004, I wasn’t prepared to just sit back and not become actively involved with my prognosis, although at the time was ‘watch and wait.’ I became involved with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, who at the time had a regatta run by the Mudheads in Mystic. That was all it took to appreciate how many sailors were affected by leukemia and committed to raising money to put an end to these cancers. It was very moving. In 2010, I was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. They call it ‘The Beast.’ It’s a horrible cancer with a low survival rate and grueling treatment. Well, I beat it. I was incredibly lucky and knew I needed to do more to return my good fortune to the cancer patient community.”

“We held our first Sails Up 4 Cancer Regatta in June of 2011,” says Bob. “I was pretty stressed, but it wasn’t as chaotic as it could have been. We had a great group of volunteers and I had quite a bit of experience with the Leukemia Cup Regattas. This was my baby and it was important to me for it to be successful, not only as a regatta but also as a fundraiser. We’re now in our seventh year, and the event is pretty much on autopilot. We’re set with the Eastern Connecticut Sailing Association, which has been great to us. We’re dialed in with the Mudhead Race Committee, and we have a much larger board and volunteer base. We have a great group of repeat sponsors and donations for our silent auction. Jeff Marshall and the staff at Mystic Shipyard are a tremendous source of support, having hosted the event under the big tent and helping out with the stage, power, ice and overall logistics.”

“We now dedicate our efforts from the Sails Up 4 Cancer Regatta to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, and we continue to raise the bar with participants in our Wellness Expo, which is near and dear to me. As a cancer survivor, I believe it’s extremely important to integrate traditional treatment with stress reduction modalities to increase your overall wellbeing and survival chances. Acupuncture, meditation, nutrition, yoga, massage therapy and many other things carry substantial benefits for cancer patients.

Sails Up 4 Cancer (su4c.org) is the beneficiary of the Connecticut Spring Boat Show, hosted by Brewer Essex Island Marina in Essex. “This was our fourth year, and it’s a great show where we garner a lot of really sweet connections,” says Bob. “We also work with Marley’s Café in Essex and Bartenders Express in Branford, who donate a percentage of their revenue to us. We have lots of fun while raising some much-needed funds.”

“The Sunshine Kids are our guests of honor during the regatta, which will be held June 17. They and their families sail down the Mystic River on Mystic Harbor Cruises’ Prudence to watch the start of the race on Fishers Island Sound, and Captain Jonathan Wilkes is also donating a percentage of his year-end revenue to Sails Up 4 Cancer. The Pirates or Free Men of the Sea greet them when they return to Mystic Shipyard, Mystic Pizza provides lunch, and Drawbridge Ice Cream provides ice cream. They have a painting class supervised by Julie Garvin-Riggs and the Florence Griswold Museum. Josie Davis from the String Theory School of Music puts together a group of students for The Kids Playing for Kids Band. Mekhael Srour and Martha Slater of Allure Dance Studio conduct line dancing classes, April Brunnell makes balloon sculptures, Tracey Anderson paints faces, the Mystic Fire Department brings a truck to the Wellness Expo if they’re not on call, and the Mystic Aquarium donates 50 tickets.”

“One of the reasons for starting Sails Up was to earmark funds raised for what I felt was critical, and we specify how we want donations to be used. For example, we requested that our $10,000 donation to the Lawrence + Memorial Cancer Center be divided between their transportation fund and their new Single Woman Head of Household Fund. Through our Spinnaker Fund, individuals going through cancer treatment can apply for financial assistance. If they’re approved, we send them a check directly.”

“The most rewarding thing about Sails Up 4 Cancer is the number of people we have been able to help. It’s the smiles on the faces of children when they’re on a boat for the first time. It’s the Thank You cards we receive from financial assistance recipients. Knowing that we’re making a difference in the lives of cancer patients is what it’s all about!”

Franklin car dealership gives $30K to local cancer charity

FRANKLIN – Since its founding six years ago, Sails Up 4 Cancer has donated thousands of dollars to organizations, including the Children’s Cancer Research Fund and the Visiting Nurses Association of Southeast Connecticut.

It also has helped dozens of New London County cancer patients pay their bills and put food on the table.

On Tuesday morning, Bob Davis, a two-time cancer survivor, avid sailor and the founder and CEO of the nonprofit Sails Up 4 Cancer, accepted the charity’s largest donation yet.

The Holmgren family, of Holmgren Subaru in Franklin, presented Davis with a check for nearly $31,000.

“It means the world,” Davis said shortly after accepting the donation at the New Park Avenue dealership. “It puts us over the top and gives us the ability to help, exponentially, more families … as they’re undergoing cancer treatments.”

The donation was the result of Subaru of America’s “Share the Love” campaign, in which a portion of each sale or lease of a Subaru during a specific time frame is donated to a retailer’s charity of choice.

Eric Holmgren, of Holmgren Subaru, said selecting Sails Up 4 Cancer as the campaign’s beneficiary for the last four years has been an easy choice.

“I liked how the money stayed local,” he said of the charity.

Also a boating enthusiast, Holmgren first met Davis through sailing more than a decade ago. The two became good friends.

“He’s just one of those people you meet who are incredibly positive and nothing gets them down,” Holmgren, of Mystic, said of Davis.

Along with awarding grants to large organizations such as Lawrence + Memorial Cancer Center and the Center for Hospice Care Southeast Connecticut, Sails Up 4 Cancer also supports, through its Spinnaker Fund, individuals in the midst of cancer treatments who need help paying their rent, utility bill or simply buying groceries.

“They just do all the little, tiny things that make someone’s life better,” Holmgren said.

The seeds of Sails Up 4 Cancer were planted in 2004, when Davis was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Shortly after, the Niantic resident began raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through its Leukemia Cup Regatta. Over four years, Davis raised more than $50,000 for the national organization, he said.

Then, in 2011, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Davis said he was moved to “do more” to help those affected by cancer, and to put his efforts toward making a local impact.

Davis, who spent his career in construction management, said he has been fortunate through the years to be able to afford his medical treatment and to own his boat. Be he knows that’s not the reality for many who are diagnosed with cancer, particularly single heads of households.

“I can’t imagine what they go through,” he said.

Sails Up 4 Cancer has been the first to donate $5,000 to the Single Women’s Head of Household Cancer Assistance Fund through the L + M Cancer Center’s social services division.

Kindness in Real Life: Davis keeps Sails Up in cancer fight

Bob Davis of Niantic has both survived cancer and thrived with cancer.

In 2004, Bob and his wife, Karen, spent her birthday at the oncologist’s office, where he learned that he had Leukemia, more specifically, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). As scary as it was, he learned that if diagnosed with leukemia, CLL is the “best” one to have.

After six years of living with CLL, Bob had an endoscopy because of difficulty swallowing. Davis was told “not to worry, they would scope and dilate his esophagus and be better than new.” Upon waking up and asking how things looked, he received utter silence from his doctor.

Bob’s wife was called and the two of them met with the doctor who explained that he had found a cancerous tumor. Bob learned what it is to undergo chemotherapy and have the skin burned off your esophagus from twenty-eight fractions of radiation therapy. Simultaneously, he also learned to advocate for cancer care and how to seek out the best treatment available. And he became a beacon of hope for others undergoing cancer treatment when founded the charity Sails Up 4 Cancer (SU4C) in the summer of 2010.

Despite Bob’s pain and agony, he endured. Bob is now in remission and he gives his time and energy to others. Most recently, Bob assisted in establishing the Spinnaker fund.

By definition, the spinnaker is a sail used when sailing with the wind behind your back. Sails Up 4 Cancer acts as that wind. The Spinnaker Fund is to encourage and support those battling cancer and undergoing expensive treatments. As expenses grow and income is lost, this fund alleviates the stress associated with financial hardships.

Bob’s enthusiasm for life is palpable, and he recognizes that his successful battle with cancer is an everyday blessing for him and for all those who know him. He continues at the helm of the organization he founded and continues to give back to his community via running events; organizing fund raisers and giving generously to L+M Hospital and the Center for Hospice Care among others.

In addition to founding and presiding over Sails Up 4 Cancer, and establishing the Spinnaker Fund, Bob is also a four-time leading fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Connecticut Regattas.
